Investigators determined that at least eight people were killed by Takata air bags that exploded with so much force they spewed shrapnel in the vehicle.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration originally said that 34 million inflators needed to be replaced. Now they say that 23.4 million driver and passenger air bag inflators on 19.2 million vehicles are being recalled.
Some inflators that went elsewhere were included in US numbers, and some were counted twice.
However, even given the reduction in recalls, the replacement efforts are far behind. Only 4.4 million air bag inflators have been replaced.
